Event Description and Key Objectives
The number of accidents and injuries due to the boom of e-scooters and e-bikes, which can be compared to motorcycle accidents, is increasing dramatically. 50% of injured or dead e-scooter drivers are not wearing a helmet, while excessive speed is the most frequent cause for these accidents. Triglav, the leading insurance company in the region in the field of mobility-related insurances, wished to develop an attractive programme that would promote the reinforcement of skills for a safe cohabitation in common traffic areas through experience/participation. Thus, the Micro-mobility Junction was born in cooperation with Promotiva, a company dedicated to the organisation of complex and innovative event-related solutions. This is the first meeting-place (and not a training range) where users of various speeds and ages and with different limitations can meet to reinforce their traffic cohabitation skills. During the event, participants of different generations can test various means of micro-mobility, including the ones used by disabled people in traffic, which helps them to develop empathy for other users of traffic surfaces. The event is organised in different towns, local communities, and schools.
Key challenges
Planning phase
Challenge: How to recreate a realistic mobile town centre which serves as the main environment for the event. Since we tried to create an urban feeling, we were looking for ways and materials to set up our micro-junction and also demarcate it. In this regard, we were met with numerous technical challenges related to materials, which had to be both extremely durable and safe (slip-resistant), and their setup.
Solution: Through test set-ups and trial runs, we determined the optimal size of the surfaces for a safe drive which also enabled intensive meeting spots (the “red dot” of the meeting spot was the centre of the junction). The slip-resistant material for the red dot was made of recycled rubber from defunct sneakers.
Safety- and logistics-related challenges: How to determine the maximum number of people who can safely meet on the same surface using different means of transport that they have perhaps never driven before. How to prepare a suitable, animated, modern and attractive driving range and provide the right amount of helmets of right sizes, as well as other protective means.
Solution: Setting up a warm-up portion of the junction where people can learn how to use their new means of transport. Assistance for this part of the project was provided by traffic expert Andrej Brglez and by traffic safety teachers from the Šenčur Elementary School.
Implementation phase:
Challenge of measurements: Since this was a dynamic and non-structured drive, we developed a special method of observation, recording of behaviours and interactions, and results analysis.
Solution: We invited colleagues who are well-versed in recording results during sporting events to participate in the project. We first developed analogue methods of observing and recording the events, and then used these analogue data to develop digital forms which simplified the monitoring process. All drivers’ helmets were marked by numbers which simplified our work and reduced the possibility of errors.
Challenge: Intergenerational cooperation is one of the most important emphases of the Micro-mobility Junction. However, older people less often decide to participate in such projects or try out means of e-mobility since they are often scared or prejudiced against that.
Solution: We reinforced our team of highly professional, emphatic colleagues who took more time for our senior participants to explain all dilemmas, assuage their fears, and help them handle their first moments using these vehicles.

Creativity
The micro-mobility junction is a unique, small-scale pop-up mobile city centre. It has been creatively designed as an attractive urban space, which marks a significant departure from classic training ranges that hosted previous training sessions in the field of micro-mobility. With creative elements such as street lamps, benches and other theme corners, this micro-mobility junction invites visitors to join the hustle and bustle of urban micro-mobility and explore freely within its limits. We have delineated the space using colour solutions, without giving the feeling of over-saturation. The delineating elements were made of soft, safe obstacles that do not give the feeling of over-saturation but feel rather safe. The intergenerational invitation was further emphasised with a children’s corner where they could assemble XXL building blocks with themes related to traffic safety, and find out more about possible situations in traffic with the friendly “Kuža Pazi” mascot. For our older visitors, we prepared cosy corners where they could rest, watch the events unfold, and exchange experiences. The scheme of the space was designed in a way that it can also be adapted to any other space.
Innovation
The development of the Micro-mobility junction was full of innovative solutions:
• a part of the junction is the first (and only) e-scooter drive simulation in Slovenia, connecting traffic safety and gamification.
• Self-standing boards functioning as part of the Junction present slogans and facts in the field of safe micro-mobility, while at the same time communicating a story of safety.
• Innovative materials (the central red dot on the ground which is crossed by participants is made of recycled rubber used in defunct sneakers) are crucially important for a safe implementation.
• The event is a fun learning experience for visitors, as well as a research training ground. Research data about the behaviour of the participants in crisis situations on common surfaces are collected, analysed and included in a broader ecosystem of data in the field of mobility of Zavarovalnica Triglav. They serve to inform the public and develop new programmes in the field of safe mobility.
• As ambassadors, we also invite athletes and para-athletes to participate in the event, thereby reinforcing our commitment to an inclusive, safe mobility for everyone.
The Micro-mobility Junction is not just another training range but rather a space for a safer future.
Execution
Promotiva includes a permanent team of skilled colleagues in terms of various needs of the implementation (setup, observing and recording, addressing the participants, performing the research, technical support), as well as Karmen Kovač, our project manager who is present at every implementation and who makes sure that they are consistently performed in a highly professional manner. Our team of experts meets several times before the event in order to make sure that the objectives of our events are achieved.
The client is included in the setup of each design, as well as in the implementation itself. Objectives are set, and risks and opportunities are defined according to the target group for every individual implementation. After the event, we prepare a short analysis and define the development for future events. We include different athletes, paralympic athletes, innovators etc., which helps us make the event more interesting and a little bit different for our participants.
Promotiva takes care for the entire implementation, including the vehicle fleet and setup. In doing so, we cooperate with local providers (such as e-bike rental companies), as well as with local sustainable development centres, municipalities, shopping centres and media.
Measurable results
We received a lot of interesting results that have never been discovered before in Slovenia:
1. we observe whether an individual driver notices another approaching driver. When they do not, in most cases (83%), it involves a person under 16 years old.
2. Among those who notice an approaching person but do not react to increase safety (e.g., by slowing down), the majority are males (70%).
3. Only 17% of participants chose not to wear a helmet while riding.
4. The most problems occur with e-scooter riding, particularly among first-time users.
5. The vast majority (86%) of participants learned safe riding practices at the Mobility Intersection event while wearing a helmet, with a quarter bringing their own. One-seventh of participants chose to ride without a helmet.
6. 70 % drivers of e-scooter simulator did not brake correctly, meaning they did not apply both brakes on the e-scooter simulator.
7. 84% of drivers of e-scooter simulator caused an accident. Everyone who crashed and caused an accident was moving at an average speed of five meters per second.
So far, we collected over 500 high-quality data which are now being used for research about safety in terms of cohabitation on common traffic surfaces. Generationally speaking, our participants are from 4 to 71 years old.
Communication
Even though the experience of the Micro-mobility Junction set up in a public space is open to everyone, persons insured with Zavarovalnica Triglav are specifically invited to take part in these projects through a newsletter related to mobility content. Famous athletes who are collaborating with Zavarovalnica Triglav and who take part in individual events and spend some time with the participants also invite people to participate in these events. In addition, the Junction is also a part of a broader concept of social initiatives such as the Mobility Week. In the field of media exposure, we published over 130 publications from May 2023 to July 2024. In order to reach different target audience, we also cooperate with a broad network of partners, sponsored parties, media and influencers for each individual event on social media. More than 20 such events took place in the aforementioned period, which allowed the reach of our publications to multiply. In the framework of the Junction, Triglav Lab, the Zavarovalnica Triglav research centre, also organises discussions with experts in the field of safe micro-mobility, as well as workshops for students and round tables.
Sustainable practices
Since every step towards a more sustainable future is a step in the right direction, we decided to use non-motorised means that were borrowed from a local provider and that are shared by employees of our companies.
- Preparing multiple-use picture material
- Making sure that all participants in these events actually move
- Using multiple-use drinking glasses at water fountains
- Refreshment spot - where water and seasonal Slovenian apples are always available
- Encouraging participants to use sustainable means of transport (skateboard, bicycle, e-scooter, etc.)
- Using multiple-use columns with retractable straps
- We made sure that the team arrived at the scene using as few cars as possible
We are proud to have been able to prepare a zero waste event.
